GEMS OF LIFE

PART I

PART II

When things go wrong as they sometimes will,
When the road you are trudging seems all uphill;
When the funds are low, and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh;
When care is pressing you down a bit -
Rest if you must, but don't quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns;
And many a fellow turns about
When he might have won, had he struck it out;
Don't give up though the pace seems slow;
You may well succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than
It seems to a faint and faltering man;
Often the struggler has given up
When he might have captured the Victor's cup!
And he learned too late, when the night came down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out,
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt.
And you never can tell how close you are
If may be near, when it seems afar.
So stick to the fight when you are hardest hit,
It is when things seem worst you must not quit.

Two brothers once lived down this way,
and one was Do and one was Say.
If streets were dirty, taxes high,
or schools too crowded, Say would cry:
"My,what a town!" But Brother Do
would set to work to make things new.
And while Do worked, Say still would cry:
"He does it wrong. I know that I could do it right."
So all the day
was heard the clack of Brother Say.
But this one fact from none was hid-
Say always talked, Do always did.

My life is but a weaving
Betweeen my God and me;
I may not choose the colours,
He knows what they should be
For he can view the pattern
Upon the upper side,
While I can see it only
On this, the under side.

Sometimes He weaves sorrow,
Which seems strange to me;
But I will trust His judgment,
And work on faithfully;
It is He who fills the shuttle,
He knows just what is best;
So I shall weave in earnest
And leave with Him the rest.

At last, when life is ended,
With Him I shall abide,
Then I may view the pattern
Upon the upper side;
Then I shall know the reason
Why paid with joy entwined,
Was woven in the fabric
Of life that God designed.

Like a weaver-patient steady;
Seated daily at his loom,
Man forever must be ready
With his threads of joy and gloom
To weave patterns-strong-enduring,
From life's days of many hues;
With methodic skill ensuring
Lasting textures he can use.

Days are but the minute fibers;
Hours and minues form the pile,
And all men-like ancient scribers
Slowly weave their afterwhile.
Some weave patterns dark, unsightly,
Some are simple, unadorned.
Others weave their textures tighly
Weaving for men yet unborn.

Let me not then sit complaining
That my strands of life are poor.
But let me daily be attaining
Weaving skills that will ensure
Textures strong - Then let me weave them
With unselfish hands and true.
Good or bad days I'll receive them
And blend to warp of pleasant hue.

Life is a sojourn here on earth
Which begins the day God gives us birth,
We enter this world from the great unknown
And God gives each spirit a form of its own.
And endows this form with a hearth and a soul
To spur man on to his ultimate goal -
And through the senses of feeling and seeing,
God makes man into a human being.
So he may experience a mortal life
And through this period of smiles and strife
Prepare himself to return as he came
For birth and death are in essence the same.
For both are fashioned by God's mighty hand
And, while we cannot understand,
We know we are born to die and arise
For beyond this world in beauty lies
The purpose of living and the ultimate goal
God gives at birth to each seeking soul-
So enjoy your sojourn on earth and be glad
That God gives you a choice between good things and bad
And only be sure that you heed God's voice
Whenever life asks you to make a choice

As little goes on from day to day
And God is always near
There is no place for hopelessness
There is no need to fear.
Lift up your eyes, behold the skies
The bright, the dark, the dim
Whatever weather there may be
It is ordained by Him.
Do not despair because of some
Injustice done to you
Do not condemn yourself too much
For wrongs that you have done
It may deplete your moral strength
In battles to be won.
Lift up your heart, have faith in God
And say a fervent prayer
For as you trust in Him, so He
Will keep you in His care.

Author : James J. Metcalfe

Some murmur when their sky is clear
And wholly bright to view
If one small speck of dark appear
In their great heaven of blue.
But some with thankful love are filled,
If but one one steak of light,
One ray of God's good mergy gilds,
The darkness of their night.

Author : Richard Chevenix Trench.

When gray threads mar life's pattern,
and seem so out of line,
Trust the master Weaver who planned
the whole design;
For in life's choicest patterns, some dark
threads must appear
To make the rose threads fairer,
the gold more bright and clear.
The pattern may seem intricate
and hard to understand,
But trust the master Weaver
and his steady, guiding hand.

Better never trouble trouble
Until trouble troubles yu
For you only make your trouble
Double trouble when you do
And your trouble like a bubble
That you are troubling about
May be nothing but a ciper
With the rim rubbed out.

Author : David Keppel.

"How can I go on?" I cried,
When I saw the hill to climb,
"Dear child", the master said,
"Take one step at a time".
As I placed my hands in his
And went along the way,
The road became much smoother,
As we travelled day by day,
So friend, if you come to a hill,
Take the hand of the Master Sublime,
And do as he suggested-
"Take one step at a time."

Author : Marion Thatcher.

Wail not for the precious chances passed away,
Weep not for the golden ages on the wane!
Each night, I burn the records of the day;
At sunrise, every soul is born again.
They do me wrong who say I come to more
When once I knock and fail to find you in;
For every day I stand outside your door
And bid you wake, and rise to fight and win.

Author : A.P. Periera

We can't be all captains, we have got to be crew
There is something for all of us here;
There is big work to do, and there is lesser to do
And the task we must do is the near.

A wise old own,
Sat on an oak,
The more he saw
The less he spoke;
The less he spoke
The more he heard;
Why aren't we like
That wise old bird ?

Look to this day,
For it is life, the very life of life.
In its brief course lie all the
Varieties and realities of your existence.

The bliss of growth,
The gloryof action,
The splendour of beauty;

For yesterday is but a dream
and tomorrow is only a vision
But today well lived makes
Every yesterday a dream of happiness,
And every tomorrow a vision of hope.
Look well therefore to this day!
Such is the salvation of the dawn.

I've shut the door on yesterday -
It's sorrows and mistakes;
I've locked within its gloomy walls
Past failures and heartaches.
And now I throw the key away
To seek another room,
And furnish it with hope and smiles
And every spring time bloom.....
I've shut the door on yesterday
And thrown the key away -
Tomorrow holds no fears for me,
Since I have found today.

Author : Vivien Yeiser Laramore.

Do not say all you know,
for he who says all he knows
often says more than he knows.

So not tell all you hear,
for he who tells all he hears
often tells more than he hears.

So not spend all you have,
for he who spends all he has
often spends more than he has.

Do not covet all you see,
for he who covets all he sees
often wants more than he sees.

Author : Unknown

Don't get discouraged when you hear
What people say about you;
Don't get the blues and drop a tear
Because they chance to doubt you.

Don't go around with troubled brow,
Over looking all life's beauty;
The folks that talk will suffer more
Than you, so do your duty.

Don't fret and fume and wish them ill,
Their lives hold little pleasure;
Send back a message of goodwill -
It will serve to heap your measure.

Don't be discouraged, for the world
Will always criticize you;
Earth's dearest treasures are the few
True friends who love and prize you.
